Actor and playwright Kate Mulvany was just three years old when her parents were told to pick out a coffin for their daughter because she had terminal cancer — and it was all because of a chemical weapon used in the Vietnam War.

Councils used that chemical here in Australia to kill blackberries. It was sold in garden supply shops as a weedkiller In the early seventies. There were instances of higher rates of stillbirth and spontaneous abortions after the councils did roadside spraying with it in some rural communities—out near Sale in Victoria was one place, I think from memory, which had a high incident of miscarriages following kerbside spraying of weeds with the Agent Orange. Oh, they gave it a number name, if I can recall back that far. Silent Spring, the book was becoming papular with mainstream readers and making people aware of what these chemicals were doing.

​helped work to get it banned. A part of my work I'd forgotten I'd done. Nice to get to my age and know I knew a lot of people who worked together to strive to leave the planet a little better. Mums and dads, grandparents, single adults, teenagers and even children working as an educated team can achieve a lot. We fail and allow these things to happen when we do leave it all to the governments we elect and then just sit back and accept what happens. I'm happy that people polos stopped both the Vietnam war and the use of this chemical.
